The LeTourneau Legend by Philip G. Gowenlock

No Longer Available

This is a history of one of the most famous of the American earthmoving equipment manufacturers, R.G. Letourneau, Inc. The book is the history of the company from the early 1920's, and follows the Company's expansion into the 1950's when it employed over 5000 employees and had four factories in the U.S.A. and one in Australia. It finishes with brief details of what happened to the Letourneau organisation.

R.G. Letourneau changed the face of earthmoving with the development of scrapers, scrapers where the prime machine that put him into the earthmoving business, originally towed behind dozers, he later developed suitable tyres for earthmoving use, and this lead to the self propelled and self loading scrapers that we know today. This books not only describes the history of the company, but also describes the history of the development of the scraper.

Also described are many other machines built by Letourneau, some practical, some not so practical. There are large forest clearing machines, tractor and road train combinations for use in the arctic circle, rubber tyred bulldozers, tree pushers, and many more. Hardcover, 315 photos.
