The American Steam Traction Engine A History of Trans-Atlantic Variety

No Longer Available

This book is published by CMS publishing (publishers of Old Glory Magazine). The book, surprisingly, is published in England, but it still comprehensively covers American tractions engines with plenty of text and many illustrations, a few also in full colour.

The early development of the traction engine in the USA and Canada is covered, with different boiler and engine configurations being detailed. There are chapters on undermounted varieties, road rollers and miscellaneous engines, and steam trucks and buses.

The Appendices contains lists of selective data such as engine, transmission and boiler dimensions for some of the major varieties.

There is also a list of known manufactures and the years they manufactured between. Included are such manufactures as Advance, Atlas, Aultman, Avery, Baker, Best, Buffalo-Pitts, Case, Farquhar, Gaar-Scott, Harrison, Holt, Huber, Marion, Minneapolis, Ohio, Peerless-Geiser, Port Huron, Rumely, A.W. Stevens, and many more., 81 in total. There are also some 11 Canadian manufactures listed.

The colour schemes of Avery, Case, Minneapolis, Reeves, Sawyer-Massey and Waterloo traction engines are listed as an aide to restorers.
