Miniature railways have, since the start of the 20th century, captured the imagination and interest of man. One such man is Neville Knight who, over the past 30 years, has visited the majority of miniature railways in this U.K., both past and present, and has built up a unique photographic record.
This book brings together more than 270 photographs from his collection, all of professional quality, illustrating some 112 miniature railways. In addition, he has provided an informative description of each railway and its locomotives providing an unprecedented synopsis on past and current events on British miniature railways from 15 inch gauge down to 7 1/4 inch.
There are currently thought to be over 200 miniature railways in Great Britain. The ones illustrated in this book all have or have had public access, whether that be on a daily basis or just open to the public on specific days or special occasions.
Over the years, other books have been published covering more specifically the history of miniature railways or just simply acting as a general guide. The broader aspect of this book clearly demonstrates the diversity and interest to be found in British Miniature Railways and hope fully it will encourage readers to see and enjoy these small railways for themselves.
"If the fascination engendered by locomotion at the present day is so intense, the attractive powers of locomotion in miniature must of necessity be greater still"
