The Traditional Farming Year by Paul Heiney

Paul Heiney was first introduced to heavy horses through his involvement in the series 'In at the Deep End'. His ensuing interest led to an 'apprenticeship' as a farm hand and trainee horseman on a traditional Suffolk farm which was run mainly by horse power. In this book Paul draws on his own experiences and goes month-by-month through the year at a time when farming methods really did revolve around the horse.

Exploring the different interpretations of the word 'traditional', Paul determines that traditional farming must involve a system in which nature remains in charge and the farmer must strike a deal with the natural forces that surround him. Detailing the work of the farm's key players; farmer, horseman, dairyman, shepherd, labourer and farm boy, this title considers who took centre stage at various junctures of the farming year.

The book includes many 1940s and 50s photographs from the archives of 'Farmer and Stockherder' magazine and the Eric Guy co11ection he1d at the University of Reading.
