Driving and Operating Traction Engines by Mike Dyson

Every traction engine enthusiast will eventually want to get up on to the footplate of an engine and experience the thrill of driving it. This book is written for anyone interested in traction engines, particularly those who would like to know more about how they work and how they are driven, whether they are new to the hobby or seasoned enthusiasts.

Mike Dyson describes the whole range of traction engines from agricultural engines and steam rollers to tractors and road locomotives together with the increasingly popular miniature engines. He explains how the engine is prepared for a day's work, how the boiler is managed safely and some of the problems encounted when driving in modern traffic conditions. The book is written in a readable style illustrated with numerous photographs as a guide to driving and operating a traction engine. Technical terms and jargon have been kept to a minimum but are explained where necessary.

Mike has owned an engine for over 20 years and has driven several thousand miles on the roads of East Anglia. Not coming from an engineering background he has, with the help of many friends, managed to learn a great deal about maintaining an engine and carrying out repairs. He has written articles for several traction engine magazines and is now a regular contributor to Old Glory.
