As the age of stationary steam power drew to a close, Colin Bowden (joint editor for the George Watkins series of books) undertook to photograph those surviving engines that he could locate in the 1970s. This book, largely designed in the same format as the Watkins series, does not include any engines featured in the Watkins books.
Some fine engines had survived and they can be seen here for the first time in many years. At the time the photographs were taken some of the engines were still in working order.
