This book fills the need for a simplified description of road planning and construction appropriate for non-engineers using, for the most part, that naturally available material: earth. A much more radical purpose of the book is to explain how earth roads could be constructed and maintained in a way that would prevent their progressive and often rapid destruction through the uncontrolled flow of water.
The text covers two basic designs of earth road called, for convenience "village" and "market" roads; definitions based on levels of usage, from a few vehicles per day or week (village), to perhaps 50 vehicles per day (market). The text describes the drainage principles and techniques; route planning and surveying; road construction and maintenance. Appendixes describe the operation of some simple pieces of surveying equipment and provide a glossary of road construction terms.
The views expressed are the direct result of building and maintaing earth roads for a period of more than twenty years in what are now the northernmost parts of Zambia.
