Black Powder Manufacture Methods & Techniques by Ian von Maltitz
cover photo
Published in 1997 by the American Fireworks News. The book was born out of frustration. For a long time the author
had tried unsuccessfully to make good fast burning Black Powder, after many years of gather information and experimenting, he achieved his objective.
He has successfully got all his collected information and knowledge together in a usable
book format. The author used to work for the largest manufacturer of commercial explosives in
the southern hemisphere, and apart from having access to their library, he also has the background needed to competently write this book. The book is written in easy to follow laymans
terms, and does not get too carried away with technical terms.
The contents include:
- Safety tips
- The Right Stuff (raw materials)
- Simple slow black powder
- Fast black powder
- Ball Mills, Wheel Mills
- Preparations
- Uses of Black Powder
- "Turbocharged" Blackpowder
- Black Powder on a Shoe string
- Alternative Methods
- Testing.
The Appendix also contains lots of useful additional information such as:
- Commercial Production
- Specifications
- Lift Charges for Shells
- US Army 1862 Gunpowder manufacture
- English Gunpowder 1862
- French Gunpowder 1862.
There are a lot more in the useful book.
