Grain Handling the way it was! by Jim Cronin

The story of wheat lumping in South Australia needed to be told.

It is now more than forty years since the last bagged grain was delivered in South Australia and sadly the majority of the men that did this work are no longer with us.

It is said that most things reach their highest and most efficient point just before they become obsolete. This was true of wheat lumping with the development of 'mousproofing' large stack elevators, elevator extensions, "tails" as they were called and "slides" or "shutes" to aid in the pulling stacks down.

The skill of the men that did this work, and the speed at which they did it had never been seen before and never will be again.

This is the story how one man, Jim Cronin saw the grain industry at the time and details his involvment in it, as lumper and grain agent.

He writes about the era when wheat lumping was at its highest point.
