Transit Australia Publishing have recently released a book which comprehensively outlines the history of horse drawn passenger trams in Australia.
The authors, Dr Jim Longworth and Duncan MacAuslan have covered the technology, geography, history and preservation of virtually all the horse trams that have operated here.
I say virtually because just after publication some recent research has uncovered a previously unknown instance of horse tram operation in the heart of Melbourne ... but I won't criticise the authors for not knowing of that.
The book is well illustrated and laid out attractively - well done Carl Segnit!
It has some interesting information including figures on the much greater load that a horse could handle on steel rails by comparison with various forms of roadway. That of course also translates to modern trams.
The book is A4 size.
